Dust Born is the fourth book in the Cambio Springs series by Elizabeth Hunter。 Sean Quinn has returned to the small desert town of Cambio Springs。 After Marcus Quinn was murdered, Sean returns to take up the mantle of leadership over the snake clan。 His return is bittersweet as he’s one of the few Quinn’s who made it out of Cambio Springs, ending his cycle of poverty。 His new life as a photographer has taken him far and wide across the globe, and into the arms of Juniper Hawkins, also a photogra Dust Born is the fourth book in the Cambio Springs series by Elizabeth Hunter。 Sean Quinn has returned to the small desert town of Cambio Springs。 After Marcus Quinn was murdered, Sean returns to take up the mantle of leadership over the snake clan。 His return is bittersweet as he’s one of the few Quinn’s who made it out of Cambio Springs, ending his cycle of poverty。 His new life as a photographer has taken him far and wide across the globe, and into the arms of Juniper Hawkins, also a photographer。 After one of their last trips, Sean gets the call and returns to Cambio Springs。 He’s shocked to find Juni in Cambio Springs, as well。 Juni is easily a distraction to Sean but when an old rival comes knocking, it’s all hands-on deck, even human ones。 Everything she writes is phenomenal。 Elizabeth Hunter is one of my all-time favorite authors。 She has writing skills that draw the reader in from the very beginning。 When I was originally approached to review the ARC of A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries, Book One) in 2011, never did I expect as much literary power to come from within the pages of a brand-new author。 Every single book I've read from Elizabeth Hunter since then carries that same power。 I have been mesmerized by her books from the very beginning。 。。。more

A cozy small-town PNR mystery with an unusual main protagonistIn anticipation of the release of Sean and Juni’s story I finally took the plunge and read the previous 3 full length novels in the series (additionally, there are 2 collections of short stories available)。 Set in the fictional small desert town of Cambio Springs each story revolves around an individual couple out of a larger set of friends and how the fell in love。 Entwined with their personal story is also a mystery – usually a crim A cozy small-town PNR mystery with an unusual main protagonistIn anticipation of the release of Sean and Juni’s story I finally took the plunge and read the previous 3 full length novels in the series (additionally, there are 2 collections of short stories available)。 Set in the fictional small desert town of Cambio Springs each story revolves around an individual couple out of a larger set of friends and how the fell in love。 Entwined with their personal story is also a mystery – usually a crime that happens at the beginning of the book – which needs to get solved while their personal relationship progresses。Cambio Springs is not just like any other desert town, but it is a place of mystery and magic。 The water of one of the wells has special magical properties, and drinking from it gave the first settlers to arrive – the original 7 families - the ability to shift into animal forms of various kinds。 The community thought to guard their secret over the years, and the descendants of those first families mostly intermarried with each other and stayed in town。 But after the nearby air-base closed, many of the residents were left hurting for jobs and a steady income。 Some thought to make their fortune elsewhere, but many also return to their hometown, especially after they have kids (that also have the ability to shift)。 Nevertheless, the town was slowly dying, until the wolf alpha (himself a successful real estate developer, recently returned from California) had the idea to build an exclusive resort to provide jobs and a perspective for the younger generation。 After some initial resistance by the more conservative members of the community, most residents are now on board with the project。 Most of this backdrop was established in the previous instalments, so you should probably start at the beginning with Shifting Dreams。Sean Quinn figured as an important supporting character in the previous books。 Out of the 7 original families the Quinns were kind of the rubble of the community, partly because of the nature of their animals (reptiles are just not as sexy as wolf or panther shifters), and partly because many of their family being dysfunctional, with parents that have left or are in prison。 After the murder of Marcus Quinn, the previous de facto head of the family, Sean feels duty bound to reluctantly take up the mantel of leadership and return to Cambio Springs, even though he is one of the few Quinns who managed to escape the cycle of neglect and poverty。 He has made a name for himself as a travel photographer and has also fallen in love with a fellow photographer, a human。 But because of his past, his secret and his responsibilities the relationship has remained rather tentative。 So it is with a heavy heart that Sean returns Cambio Springs。 Imagine his surprise when he encounters Juni in the house of one of his friends。But before Sean and Juni can find their happily ever after, Sean not only has to reassess his role within his family clan, but they also have to reckon with the largest threat their community has ever faced。I have to admit that even though Elizabeth Hunter gave it her best shot, I still struggled with the idea of reptile shifters as sexy, eww。And despite the fact, that for Sean and his sister Maggie it absolutely makes sense and it is what they both want, I was still somewhat disturbed that in the context of broader gender dynamics it is Sean who in the end gets to pursue his love and his dreams and it is Maggie who gets stuck with looking after and nurturing the juveniles in the clan that do not have anybody else to provide that role, thus re-affirming gender stereotypes that were only briefly called into question。What I liked most about the series is the friendships between the protagonists of all the books, how they supported each other, and that they also admitted new people into their group。 I also appreciated how the series focused on the struggle of a small town after losing its main industry, and how the townspeople rallied to find solutions to revive it。 At the same time I found the mostly hereditary and rather hierarchal power structures quite problematic。 So, overall I would give th book 4。25 stars。 。。。more

I started reading this in Elizabeth Hunter's newsletters when it was a serial and I'm so so glad she decided to return to this world。 It was so great to see familiar characters explore a transformation in their community and address some of the questions that came up in the last 3 books in a satisfying and thoughtful manner。 Sean and Juni have waited so long for their HEA and it's beautiful。 I started reading this in Elizabeth Hunter's newsletters when it was a serial and I'm so so glad she decided to return to this world。 It was so great to see familiar characters explore a transformation in their community and address some of the questions that came up in the last 3 books in a satisfying and thoughtful manner。 Sean and Juni have waited so long for their HEA and it's beautiful。 。。。more

It’s been a long time (7 or 8 years?) since we had an edition to the Cambio Springs series。 Although I didn’t remember all the characters and pairings all that well, I fell back easily into the shifter world that Hunter has built。 It’s a unique series and I always love her writing。I have 2 tiny mild objections:1) with this story in particular, I really don’t like overprotective older brothers challenging or threatening the love interest of their *adult* younger sisters (and actually, I don’t car It’s been a long time (7 or 8 years?) since we had an edition to the Cambio Springs series。 Although I didn’t remember all the characters and pairings all that well, I fell back easily into the shifter world that Hunter has built。 It’s a unique series and I always love her writing。I have 2 tiny mild objections:1) with this story in particular, I really don’t like overprotective older brothers challenging or threatening the love interest of their *adult* younger sisters (and actually, I don’t care if the sister is younger or older, it really is unnecessary)。 2) with the series in general, not an objection really, but I just with it was a different setting then the dessert。 Just a personal preference。 Would love if it was set somewhere completely different like in PNW or like Nova Scotia (don’t ask me how that popped in my head) or some other foreign country that had more interesting natural characteristics。 But I know that just my personal tastes, so I’m not taking any stars away for that。 Overall, great characters, great backstory, interesting magical world, and strong writing。 Edited to add that I love these new covers!4 stars 。。。more

This long-awaited story from Cambio Springs takes characters we’ve come to love from earlier books in this series and then builds up a beautiful bond with newer characters。 It was like being happily full from dinner and then ordering a delicious dessert because indulging just seems like the obviously right choice。 I really wanted to just inhale it once I got the first taste, but instead I found myself truly taking the time to savour it。 I paused。 I considered。 I hypothesized。 I let myself sink i This long-awaited story from Cambio Springs takes characters we’ve come to love from earlier books in this series and then builds up a beautiful bond with newer characters。 It was like being happily full from dinner and then ordering a delicious dessert because indulging just seems like the obviously right choice。 I really wanted to just inhale it once I got the first taste, but instead I found myself truly taking the time to savour it。 I paused。 I considered。 I hypothesized。 I let myself sink into it slowly and enjoyed discovering all the ways the Elizabeth Hunter tied up the little loose ends she left in limbo from the previous books。 I keep coming back to Elizabeth Hunter’s writing because she addresses important societal topics like inclusion & discrimination with such grace and compassion。 We are given characters with layers who aren’t easy to simply classify as “good” or “bad” because she provides us with context and history showing what has happened to them。 So, while we may not be able to ever like some of their actions - we do understand why their passion to do so is present。 We do get some heartbreak - but we also get some hope and that’s a key balance to find。 Generational trauma (even when discussed on a surface level) pulls both of those emotions and I applaud Elizabeth’s capacity to be gentle but also firm in her approach。 I adored watching Sean and Juni’s love story finally unfold and the little snippets of their future we get at the end of this book were icing on the cake。 This book was every bit the sweet and savoury dessert I had hoped it would be! When I received a complimentary copy of this book in advance with the intention of reviewing it, I didn’t realize how much I had been waiting for it。 I’m so happy to say that I loved it and absolutely would recommend it to others。 While it could be read as a stand-alone, readers will get so much more out of this story if they read the earlier books in this series first。 。。。more

Two Stubborn Souls CollideOf all the Cambio Springs couples stories, Sean and Juni's has this be my favorite。 What a way to end the series, although I feel a novella or two may arise at some point。As with all Elizabeth Hunter's books, this was well thought out, detailed and gripping, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure。 We were taken for a ride in the desert, and it turned out to be a bumpy and eventful adventure, and was Juni in for a very big surprise。 As we know, nothing is as it Two Stubborn Souls CollideOf all the Cambio Springs couples stories, Sean and Juni's has this be my favorite。 What a way to end the series, although I feel a novella or two may arise at some point。As with all Elizabeth Hunter's books, this was well thought out, detailed and gripping, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure。 We were taken for a ride in the desert, and it turned out to be a bumpy and eventful adventure, and was Juni in for a very big surprise。 As we know, nothing is as it seems in Cambio Springs。。。This was for me, one if the best stories in this series, and I just felt connected to Sean and especially Juni。 Dust Born was highly anticipated, but most definitely worth the very long wait。 Highly recommend this shifter series, the characters are awesome。 。。。more
